Day ONE

We met in the wee hours of Monday morning to talk about Public Art.  We see it everywhere..in the form of sculpture, graffiti, mosaics and Murals.  People make Public Art because they want to connect with the community and express something.  Our mural is going to be a Map that connects the community in one space.  We talked about documentation and how we are going to record our Public Art Mural.

We re-freshed our knowledge of color theory and mixed all the colors for our mural!

MS 136: We Are Here: Project Goals

Our goals for this project are based on the idea of connecting students to their community through a focus on public art and the building of language to communicate their personal reflections.  Artistically, the students will work together to make a collaborative mural on the side of their school, engaging team building skills and communication.  They will learn the process of creating a public work of art from brainstorming to organization, from process to finalization.

The students will be building work for their English Language Arts Portfolio as they write poetry and develop a spoken word performance centered around a greater understanding of their community gained through the mural painting.  They will be encouraged to communicate about this place they call home in a poetic and creative way.

Essential Questions:
How does the spoken word effect community?
What is Community?  What does it mean to you?
Do you think this mural will have an effect on the surrounding community?
What is Art?  What does it mean to you?
